Garmin N. America App Reviews

So far works great

I just bought this app on Friday November 28th 2014 but used it driving around over the weekend and it so far has worked flawlessly on my iPhone 6. The interface is just like my Nuvi 265. So far I love this app! And now one less electronic device I have to carry around in my car. Update 12/7/14: The app works great and still 5 stars just wish they would put a detour option on the map so you dont have to scroll back and also give an option for the voice navigation audio default from the phone itself not Bluetooth. I dont like navigation through Bluetooth as there is a delay as the Bluetooth connects and interrupts my music too often when there are lots of turns so I have to manually turn on phone audio every time I connect...just little conveniences would make this app perfect and these are very minor complaints. Update 9/25/15- using app on a road trip to Shenadoah National Park. Downgraded one star from 5 to 4. App just uses wrong street names in the voice prompts every so often but the mapping is working good. Wrong street names is annoying though. I am not going to update to latest version until I am home as if this app stops working I wont have my gps to guide me home and its 2015, who carries a paper map with them anymore? haha. 11/7/16 Had same crash issue with latest update but uninstalled and reinstalled app and it works great. I still love this app. It works great for me.

Love it - updated review

I do see what everyone is saying. They do need to update for iOS 10. Otherwise it works ok but the menu buttons are in the center when you put the phone on landscape. I do like it but would like it more if they updated it. Update : 10/31/16. App has been updated and works. Love it. Thank you Garmin!! Note: if it crashes after update, delete and reinstall. It worked for me. Even purchased a few more features as it works great now! Thank you Garmin for the update!!! Update: three updated versions later and back to square 1. It shuts off within minutes even while youre following directions, which is a hazard as you have to reopen the app constantly while driving. Disputing the charge and asking for my money back. Beyond frustrated

Back to normal

With the startup crash fixed, its back to business as usual. Not the prettiest app in the world, and some of the UI could use work (Why is there no way to review or reorder waypoints for your current trip?), itll get you where youre going, and wont require any cellular coverage to do it.

Keep Crashing

After I updated to iOS 10 the app keeps crashing. Not happy at all

Works, but very unstable

At least the app got updated to work in iOS 10, but it crashes frequently when following a route.

Horrible

I just bought this, and Im sorry I did. I cant believe Garmin would produce an app like this and then sell it for nearly 60 bucks.

Now unstable crashes often

Been a customer for many years. This new update on iOS 10 crashes way too often. Ive fresh installed and still crashes. How am I to navigate to my destination if I have to reopen the app every 2 minutes. Unusable. Sad.

Good until IOS 10

Updated review: The last update fixed the issues with IOS 10 and finally gave us map updates. Loving it again

Nothing but problems

I paid over $100 for this app with all the add-ons and it is terrible. While driving from my home to Cleveland, the app would force close and my iPhone would go back to the home screen. I would have to restart the app, and sometimes, soft reset my phone. In the middle of Cleveland the display froze, it told me to turn now onto 105th street but the display showed me 2 blocks away though I was at 105th and needed to turn. Another soft reset of the phone later and it worked again. This is unacceptable when downtown in an unfamiliar city. Now, when trying to calculate a route that is a fair distance away, I get the error: Route Calculation Error. Not enough memory available, a soft reset doesnt fix this issue, and I have a 2GB memory iPhone 6s+

Three recent updates, all failures

This app had been great for 4+ years. However, the last few updates have been unstable, unreliable or inaccurate (a big problem for a Nav app!). The first automatic update caused the app to crash upon opening. I deleted the app and reinstalled (then had to re-download the 3gb of required files). The reinstalled version worked, but crashes whenever the app went into the background (dont try to change music on a road trip). The next update promised to fix the crashing problems, and it did. But it substituted them with other oddities. I cant set the "home" location anymore (the prompt is there, it just doesnt save), I cant change the vehicle icon, and many addresses are off by several hundred feet where they used to be dead accurate. Those oddities are coupled with fun things like the app selectively muting itself, then crashing outright when it needs to recalculate the route because you missed its unannounced directions. Moreover the app is not nearly as responsive and seems to lag far more than it used to in the last version. If the AppStore allowed for version rollback, I definitely would. But alas thats not possible, so I guess Im back to using AppleMaps.

Slow to update the app

This is generally a good app, with a key feature being you have your map data on the phone, so driving somewhere with no cell coverage doesnt affect you. The map keeps working, unlike a program that downloads map data on the fly. Live traffic data is also very helpful in routing commutes. You already know the way home, but its helpful to be able to choose an alternate when traffic is stubbed up on the usual route. Garmins usage of traffic data seems more up-front and informative than other mapping apps. Unfortunately, Garmin is slow to roll out updates. Apple releases beta versions of iOS updates well before new iOS versions are rolled out to the general public, in part so that developers can make certain their apps will at least continue to function. It seems as though Garmin instead just waits to see if they get complaints, and then starts working on it. This happened again with iOS 10, making this app useless for weeks after the update. If Garmin doesnt wish to continue to support an app that doesnt continue to generate revenue, ok then. They should just say that. If they do intend to maintain it, they shouldnt wait until its broken to take notice of the iOS update schedule.

Used to be a great app!

The new update makes it useless. The app crashes for no apparent reason, which renders it unusable. I tried using it today for the holiday and I had to switch to Waze. Fix the app and I will change my rating. I used to love this app and swear by it to all of my family and friends.

Poor display usage on iPad

First the good: this app appears to be the Garmin Nuvi software which is easy to use and full featured. The bad: this app makes very poor use of the screen on my iPad. Garmin appears to have implemented iPad support by providing a double sized iPhone display. The display leaves a 1/4" to 1/2" blank border around the map and uses excessively large words, icons and buttons. I estimate the blank border takes up 20% of the screen area. I expect better from a company with vast experience in navigation systems on a wide variety of devices and displays (marine, aviation, automotive, handheld, etc.)

Unstable

As many other reviewers have commented, when this app is working, its outstanding! But, as now, following an Apple update, the Garmin app becomes almost unusable due to frequent crashes - seemingly in areas where you need it most (dense urban cores - poor GPS? Frequent cell tower hops? Network saturation?). I hope they fix it soon...

Not what used to be...

I have been using this successfully for several years over several iOS updates without significant issues. This is no longer the case. Since upgrading to iOS 10, this app has not functioned properly on either an iPhone 6 or an iPhone 6s. It no longer is capable of using the phones compass/accelerometer features to provide a 3-D view for navigation, rendering the app useless for navigation. Im hopeful that Garmin will remedy this at some point, but I would avoid investing until this is resolved.

maps and route algorithms outdated

I want to use this app. but it is only for extreme circumstances when we have no cell coverage. compared to apple or google maps this gps is terrible. cant find addresses takes you on terrible routes on city streets even though my settings tell it otherwise. for 50$ I expect more. get it together Garmin

No longer works on iPhone

Loved the app, but it no longer works on my iPhone. Works fine on my iPad, but get "cannot calculate route" on my phone. No points of interests on the phone, either. All maps updated, both devices running iOS 8.1.2, both have location services turned on. Until its fixed, its useless!

Lack of iPhone 6 support

Garmin apparently didnt hear that a new iPhone came out. App no longer works, cant route you and no point of interest, no exit services etc. Its now a $50 map that shows where you are.

Need a search option for rest area along my route

Garmin of more current gps one provides a search option for my route option. This option is very helpful for finding rest areas along the route. Please provide this option for us.

App not working!

I always get "Authentication error ".
